The United States of America was built on the backs of immigrants. It is an undisputed fact that the vast majority of people currently living in this great country trace their routes to foreign lands. This understanding that America is comprised of foreigners has led some, such as Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, to advocate for an open border system, especially the Mexican Border.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin fight for this reality both through public speeches as well as the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. The Frontera Fund was established to help other non-profits with similar beliefs make an impact in their local vicinity. These non-profits often specialize in increasing awareness of human, civil, and migrant rights.
They are fighters for the freedom of speech and allowing civilians to protest as needed. These funds primarily benefit the Hispanic community which has been the brunt of racial bias and abuses in the state of Arizona.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund came about because Michael and Jim stood up against somebody who was denying basic human rights to Hispanics. The monster’s name was Joe Arpaio, and his cruel acts against humanity earned him the glorious title of “America’s Toughest Sheriff.” It would seem the more racist you were, the more you were hailed in America.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin discovered that Sheriff Arpaio had begun firing police officers who failed to racially profile Hispanics. Once their jobs were open and he was interviewing their replacements, Arpaio would ask if they had any hostility toward immigrants. If the answer was yes, they went to the top of the hiring pile. Once they were hired, Arpaio instructed them to let more whites go so that they would have more time to focus on the Hispanic crowd.
Lacey and Larkin made it known the awful deeds that Arpaio was committing. Using their two media channels the world heard of what had happened. Arpaio, who is used to having the authority to exercise his power, cocked a fascist attitude and illegally detained both of these men. This move was his biggest mistake.
Lacey and Larkin won $3.75 million from the Maricopa County in a lawsuit. This settlement money was used to start the Frontera Fund. Sheriff Arpaio thought he stopped them when he arrested them. Unfortunately for him, he fueled his opposition and gave them the foundation they needed to succeed.
